I recently went to a doctor’s appointment, and I noticed something that is far too easy to observe anymore.  It was a (I have a feeling that you could plug any city name in here you want) City Police vehicle traveling on a three-lane highway in the general direction of the city’s center. This police officer was driving at just over 55 MPH in a 40 MPH posted speed zone.  It wasn’t just for a sprint but rather that was the speed he settled in at.

I have had a speeding ticket in the past (several years ago) and I am very conscious of posted speed limits.  I also know that many times police officers are encouraged to disregard various motor vehicle laws in the pursuit of justice.  I have even been told by some of them that they are not supposed to use sirens to avoid alerting criminals of their impending approach.  However, since I can’t read minds any better than anybody else, I cannot know if this officer was in pursuit of crime.  There is nothing wrong and everything right with any officer alerting surrounding vehicles with lights flashing that something is going on.

To not use the equipment installed on the car (flashing lights) to tell people that observe this behavior that the law is being disregarded on purpose is to set a VERY BAD example of what posted speed limits mean.  If the officer can do it then it must be okay for everyone else!

What do you think?
