In most states seat belts are required by law to be in use when a vehicle is in use.  Much earlier in my life I was involved in two car crashes that I did not have my belt buckled for.  I can attest from personal experience that it makes a lot more sense to be buckled and not just to satisfy the law in your state.

Attached is a 1 minute and 29 sec video that shows the real reason why you should have them on.  It is a family tragedy not to have them buckled and the family can’t do what’s shown after a crash occurs even if they wanted to.

A police officer told me that he has never unbuckled a dead person and I have every reason to believe him.  Seat belts do save lives BUT you should drive and ride in a vehicle like you don’t have them – defensively!!
